What is PR anyway?

PR or public relations is the way that a business communicates with the public and the media. PR uses tools like newsletters, press releases, the world wide web, statements, and more to maintain a positive image in the community. PR is different than advertising. It’s not as much selling a product or using marketing tactics and promotions, but rather, it’s a way to distinguish yourself from the competition.

The Pitch & Why It’s Important


How do you get someone to pick up your story? First, you’ll need to reach out to journalists and other press with a pitch. No matter your reason for a pitch, whether it be for exposure, reputation, damage control, or other, you’re going to need to offer value to the journalist.

Tips For Positioning Yourself

  • Pitch relevant and captivating information.
  • Become an authority figure.
  • Be Confident.
  • Maintain excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Reach out to bloggers.
  • Do your research and know who you are talking to.
  • Follow your connections on social media.
  • Follow up.
